Laser Tattoo Removal FAQ

Blue Water Spa Medical Spa Serving Raleigh, Durham, Cary and Nearby Areas

How it Works
Tattoos are created by embedding ink in cells in the top layer of skin. At Blue Water Spa, we utilize dual wavelength lasers that can penetrate deep into the skin. The energy breaks up the tattoo ink in the skin so it can easily be eliminated through the body’s lymphatic system. During the treatment the PicoWay’s hand piece delivers energy with an highly precise, high-power laser in extremely short pulses to target ink particles with great impact. These pulses shatter the tattoo ink into minuscule particles, making it easier for the body to carry away and clear the tattoo, requiring few treatments.

Can all tattoos be treated?
We can treat professional and amateur tattoos. It is possible to treat cosmetic, traumatic and medical tattoos, along with genital tattoos. However, we do not feel that there is enough consistent data to prove that it’s safe. Tattoo removal can safely be performed on all skin types. We offer lasers that use dual wavelength technology that allows all colors to be targeted for removal. Everything from small, single-color tattoos to large, multicolored tattoos can now be significantly faded if not completely erased.

How Soon After Getting a Tattoo Can it be Removed?
The treatment area must be completely healed prior to performing laser tattoo removal on the treatment area. In most patients, this can take anywhere from 2 – 4 weeks.

How Can I Get the Best Results from Tattoo Removal?
At Blue Water Spa, we have put together a protocol that will aid you in obtaining the best results possible. Tattoo removal relies on the lymphatic system to help with the elimination of the treated pigment. At Blue Water Spa, we offer vibrational therapy at no additional fee. This device is designed to increase circulation and assist with lymphatic drainage. As a patient, we suggest daily moderate exercise, such as walking, will also increase circulation and support the lymphatic system. We also use Gentle Waves Photomodulation Light Therapy, technology used by NASA for wound healing, to accelerate the healing process. In addition, we include Post Laser Gel, a soothing and healing ointment to facilitate advanced healing.

Does Laser Tattoo Removal Hurt?
The degree of discomfort varies with each person depending on the nature and location of the tattoo on the body. Most patient’s feel that it is comparable to getting the tattoo in the first place. Patient’s report that the discomfort is well worth the results!

How Many Treatments Will I Need?
The number of treatments will depend on how large the tattoo is, what inks were used, and how deep the tattoo was inked into the skin. On average, patients will need 5-8 sessions for complete removal.

Why Are Tattoos so Difficult to Remove?
Depth: Ink is injected into the dermis, below the skin, where it’s harder to remove.

Ink Particle Size: The bigger the ink particle size, the harder it is to remove a tattoo. Traditional laser tattoo removal can be used to break up ink particles making them easier for the body to carry away, but sometimes the remaining ink particles are still too large, even after multiple laser treatments.

Color: While blues and blacks are easy to treat, reds and yellows can be difficult to nearly impossible to remove.

Skin Tone: With most lasers, darker skin tones are harder to treat because too much energy can be absorbed into the skin rather than the targeted ink particles. Not only does this weaken the results, it also increases the risk of injury.

How Often Can Treatments Be Performed?
The frequency of your tattoo removal appointments will be based on clinical judgment. For most patients this ranges between 8-12 weeks.

Old Laser Technology vs. Picoway
Limitations of Traditional Laser Tattoo Removal

  • Limited treatment of tattoo colors and types
  • Inability to effectively break up ink particles
  • Discomfort during treatments
  • Certain risks, particularly with darker skin tones

PicoWay utilizes unique picosecond laser technology to deliver fast, comfortable treatments – more than any other traditional laser tattoo removal solution available.

Unlike traditional lasers, PicoWay delivers energy to the targeted ink in ultra-short pulses that are so fast, they’re measured in picoseconds that’s one trillionth of a second!

The PicoWay Difference

FEW TREATMENTS: FDA cleared for a wide range of tattoos, PicoWay offers better results in few treatments for different skin types.

FAST RESULTS: With its ultra-fast delivery of concentrated, high-power energy, PicoWay will shatter even the tiny ink particles making it easier for the body to clear the tattoo ink.

MINIMIZED RISK: PicoWay’s ultra-short pulses also optimize for delivery of energy to the targeted ink particles ensuring the ink is effectively treated, while the least amount of heat gets transferred into the skin.

MINIMAL DISCOMFORT: Since PicoWay’s pulses are fast, you’ll feel minimal discomfort throughout the procedure.

Are PicoWay treatments safe and are there any side effects?
PicoWay treatments selectively treat the tattoo while leaving surrounding skin undamaged. After treatments, patients may experience temporary discoloration or reddening of the skin around the treatment site. Some patients may also experience a temporary lightening of the skin following treatment. The skin will typically resolve to a normal skin tone.
